Indonesia bags second place in Akamai’s latest report on largest sources of cyber attacks, beating the US, Russia and India while it’s at it.

Unsurprisingly, through a security survey conducted by US security firm Akamai, we found out that China and Indonesia are heading the list of some 177 countries as sources of Internet attacks. AFP reported that data saw China staying at the top of the list in the first quarter of 2013, but its share of these crimes dipped by seven percent from what was reported in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Akamai’s senior program manager for editorial, information security group, Bill Brenner suggested that the decline could be “related to Indonesia making a sudden appearance in the second place slot.” He also noted that the largest country in Southeast Asia saw its share of attacks jump from 0.7 percent to 21 percent in a mere quarter.

Brenner added, “We find that nearly 68 percent originated in the Asia Pacific/Oceania region, up from 56 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, likely due to the massive increase seen in Indonesia.”

It was also reported that the US bagged third place but saw its share drop a measly 1.7 percent from 10 percent earlier. The next few in line for “largest sources of cyber attacks” were Turkey (4.5 ສ່ວນຮ້ອຍ), ຣັດເຊຍ (2.7 ສ່ວນຮ້ອຍ), ປະເທດອິນເດຍ (2.6 ສ່ວນຮ້ອຍ), ໃຕ້ຫວັນ (2.5 ສ່ວນຮ້ອຍ), Brazil (2.2 ສ່ວນຮ້ອຍ), Romania (2.0 ສ່ວນຮ້ອຍ) and Hong Kong (1.6 ສ່ວນຮ້ອຍ).”

The study also revealed that South Korea had the highest average connection speed at 14.2Mbps and maintained its title of being the country with the highest level of “high broadband” adoption.

It also estimated more than 733 million unique Internet addresses from 243 countries or regions connected to the Akamai platform, an increase of 3.1 percent over the previous quarter and 10 percent year over year.
